Coral's technology provides low-cost atmospheric carbon removal by
leveraging the world's largest natural Carbon sink -– the ocean.
With minimal environmental impacts and using only renewable
electricity and ocean water as inputs, our process uses natural
elements found in the ocean, such as Calcium, Magnesium. It
mineralizes them using dissolved Carbon Dioxide to produce safe
mineral carbonates.
With no CO2 needing to be sequestered or the
need for purpose-built air contactors, adsorbents/absorbents, or
rare earth metals, Coral's solution enables large-scale carbon
removal at a lower cost.
The process begins by pulling a stream of water into our system. This water contains carbonate minerals along with dissolved carbon dioxide. Therefore, the seawater does not need to be treated before entering our plant.
The second step is to pass the water through a bipolar membrane and electrolyze, which causes the water to split into H+ and OH- ions.
The high concentration of OH- ions makes the water basic speeding the reaction between bicarbonate ions and carbon dioxide to form stable carbonates.
The resulting stream is devoid of CO2 and is basic (pH > 8). The basic water can be used in desalination plants as an input or neutralized with an alkaline acid and released back into the ocean to capture more atmospheric carbon.
We capture valuable hydrogen fuel as a secondary byproduct. The hydrogen can be used as electricity to run the plant or be sold to fuel cell companies to boost the clean fuel economy.
Coral's solution enables Gigaton scale Carbon removal at a low cost and is scalable to any location with ocean access.
